Introductions
It seems appropriate before I get started, since I know that some folks reading this don't know me, to take a moment to introduce myself and the work I'm doing in the Dominican Republic.
My name is Anna, and I grew up in Oregon. After graduating from college, I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Kazakhstan trying to teach English, experience Kazakh culture, and learn to like the taste of horse's milk. (I only succeeded in the first two tasks, though!)
Back in the States, I got my Masters of Arts in Teaching and moved to the Oregon coast to teach 5th grade. I've been in Toledo for six years, where I've been blessed to work with many wonderful students and colleagues.
I quickly learned that teaching is one of the most difficult jobs you can take on. Although my Masters program was wonderful and I learned a great deal from it, I found that my most useful learning came from the support I received on the job from veteran teachers who mentored me. I've known that God has a call on my life to serve overseas, and I believe he wants to use my passion for education to serve teachers and help them improve their teaching techniques.
COPA (Community Partners Association) works with two schools in the Dominican Republic, in the villages of La Hoya and Bombita. I will be serving with them as Education Advisor, working with teachers to help develop the quality of learning and teaching at the COPA schools.
Check out COPA's website for more information about their history and what they're doing in the DR.
If you want to support the work I'm doing in the DR, consider sponsoring a student through COPA for $15 a month.
You can also use Amazon Smile to donate to them every time you shop. To add COPA to your Amazon Smile account, visit smile.amazon.com and search for Community Partners Dominican Republic. It will come up as "Community Partners, Inc." based in Sarasota, FL. Then, whenever you shop on Amazon, just be sure to go to smile.amazon.com instead of the regular amazon.com website.
